The Traveling Ducheks

  • Trinidad, CA (April 10-April 24)

We moved to Trinidad, CA from Petaluma…this was a long drive when pulling a fifth wheel.  We stayed at Elk Country RV Park.  It is a cool place!  The park is very large and right off Hwy 101.  We were able to get a pull-thru site, which I love.  The elk were out the first night we got there.  Its a huge herd and they are pretty chill.  Obviously, they aren’t tame or anything…the park has tons of rules about them, which I appreciate.

The first day there, we drove to Klamath and then on to Crescent City to do some grocery shopping and such.  When we returned home, there were police cars, park ranger trucks, a fire truck and two ambulances right next to our camper!  I almost had a heart attack, as I was sure that something must have happened to our rig or Scooby.  Fortunately for us, it wasn’t anything to do with us.  Our ‘neighbor’ was a young man in his early 20’s who was in a small SUV with a canoe and a tiny U-haul trailer.  We figured he was just there for the night, as he had no real place to sleep.  Well, apparently, he was sitting in his SUV, cleaning a gun he had recently purchased and accidently shot himself through the hand!!!  He was taken to the hospital after they got him bandaged up.  The camp host came over and told us what was going on.  She assured us that he would be leaving as soon as he got back from the hospital, as it is against their policies to have a gun on property.  I felt kinda bad for the kid…I wan’t sure how he was going to drive after that!

Anyhoo…while in the area, we did alot.  We visited Eureka and visited the zoo, which had a skywalk through the redwoods…I did it, but was not super thrilled.  I just prefer to keep my feet on stable ground these days.  LOL!  We got done with the skywalk and it started pouring rain, so we decided to come back another day.

We also went to the Trees of Mystery, did the skywalk there (lol) and did the gondola ride to the top of the trees…we could see the coastline, which was cool.  We also went to Battery Lighthouse and Point St George Lighthouse.

We went to Fern Canyon, which is amazing!  The drive in is fun…rocky, muddy and sloppy!  Took Johnny on his first stream crossing…loved it!

We visited Humbolt Botanical Gardens in Eureka and went back to the zoo to finish it, which wasn’t much…it is a tiny zoo, but cute enough.  We saw the Carson Mansion, it is quite a site.  On the way home, we stopped in McKinleyville to see the World’s Largest Totem Pole, made from a single tree, 160 foot high.  Canada claims one, but apparently they cheated, as theirs is TWO poles, one on top of another.

The last day in Trinidad, we went to Klamath to see the Tour Thru Tree (which we walked thru…as Johnny’s hips are a bit too wide for such things.  We also ate at a little diner and I fell in love!  I have been searching for a place that has a good Eggs Benedict and this tiny diner had the BEST!  The owner served us and she was a doll!  She treated us like we were regulars and I ate it up.  I was half disappointed/half thrilled that we didn’t find this place earlier, as if we had, I would have begged to eat there daily and gained 40 pounds.  LOL

We really enjoyed the property at Elk County RV Park and the elk even came to tell us goodbye…we will definitely stay here again someday!
  • Petaluma, CA (April 3-April 9)

We were then set to move to the Coast Guard Base RV Park in Petaluma, CA (4-3).  When we headed out, we stopped to get a tire pressure monitoring system installed.  I just wanted to brag about the fact that I managed to back the RV into this RV shaped hole…no easy task, especially when at this point, I have only backed the fifth wheel up about 3 times prior!

Just took this to remember how painful gas prices are!

The Coast Guard Base was nice!  It was set back in a field area with a pond and tons of geese and turkeys!  There was a pizza place on base that was quite good.  While there, we visited Point Reyes Lighthouse, Point Bonita Lighthouse, Bodega Bay, Goat Rock Beach, Armstrong Redwoods State National Reserve and explored Petaluma.  Thomas and Rachelle drove over to visit us.

  • Oye, I’m not good at this! Catching up– Rio Vista, CA (March 22-April 3)

Ok, so we are going to go back to late March *eek*.

We left Yosemite (3-22), which was a great time, and went to Sandy Beach RV Park in Rio Vista, California.  This is near our son, Thomas, and Rachelle.  We were looking forward to spending some time with them.  I left the next day to DFW to take Mama to some Dr. appointments and visit with family.  Ed stayed in Rio Vista with the rig.  I got back and while there, we visited Jelly Belly, the Western Railroad Museum and the Military Museum….oh….and Thomas and Rachelle 😉

  • I know, I know….

I promise I will update.  We have discovered that we tend to stay in places that don’t have the best internet connections or we are so busy enjoying the area, that I don’t post like I should!  I’m trying to get better at it…kinda like I am starting my diet…tomorrow…

I promise I will post soon.  Ed did move all my photos to the computer, so that helps TONS!

  • Yosemite National Park (March 10-22)

Honestly, just a photo dump of a couple of days at Yosemite Valley.

Can you spot the tiny climbers?
  • Yosemite Lakes Campground (March 10-22)

We moved to Yosemite Lakes RV Park on March 10th. The drive was an experience, I must say. Very curvy, narrow mountain road. I was happy when we got to the park!  I spotted a site on the river. It is a back-in site, but I had to have it. I did get it in the site within a few tries. I’ve only backed this camper twice now, so I was proud to get her parked!
The view from our site. The river is just beyond the grass.
    Birds swarming the feeder.
    Scooby enjoying the sun.
Ed and I just living the life!!

Ed bought this ‘smokeless’ fire pit. 🤔

  • A Tour of Our Home

I thought that maybe a tour of our home might be nice.

I was determined not to get a floor plan that had the front door open directly into the kitchen. I wanted either a front or back kitchen. We saw this unit on our very early hunt and we ended up going back to it in the end.

This is a view looking into the living area and kitchen beyond from the stairs that lead to the bathroom and bedroom.

This is Ed’s work area. We took the sofa bed unit out of the slide and created this ‘office’ space.

Looking into the living area from the kitchen.
We removed the second sofa bed from this slide, right inside the front door entry. The cube units are bolted to the floor (after a few traveling mishaps). We use the two ‘open’ cubes to hold our shoes.
    The kitchen
My craft area. We removed the dining table that was in this slide. It’s too small a space for the two of us to feel comfortable at a table eating there. We tried. Lol

    Another view of kitchen/craft space.

    Bathroom commode & shower
This is the stairs and hallway that lead to the bathroom (on the left) and the bedroom (beyond the door).
On this day, Ed was still sleeping when I took the photos and I haven’t gotten around to taking photos of the bedroom. I’m not one for ‘making the bed’ (gasp!) but I will do so in the next few days and post them. It’s spacious and has a washer & dryer, which is a wonderful thing!

So, there is our humble tiny home.
  • Morgan Hill (Feb 24-March 10)

We enjoyed Morgan Hill for the most part.  The sites were decently spaced and the park was well maintained.  I was sick for the majority of the time we were here.  I’m pretty sure it was a really awful ‘bout of food poisoning.
I did get hummingbirds right away and had a large variety of birds visit my feeder.
Scooby was not a fan of the gravel in the dog park, though he did sniff and sprinkle everything possible!
We went on a couple of short hikes. I really wasn’t well enough to do much.
  • Santa Cruz Wharf & Clam Chowder Cook-off (Feb 27th)

We decided to check out the Santa Cruz Warf and Boardwalk.  They had a Clam Chowder Cookoff going on, so of course I had to join in the fun!!!  Ed had no interest, shocking, I know. LOL!

We enjoyed the warf and the sea lions.

I wanted to check out this fright walk, but it wasn’t open. Boo
  • So sorry for the delay! (Jan 19-March 10)

We have been in areas that had no internet!  It was wonderful, but I got very behind on posting updates.  I tried to post quick photos to IG and Facebook while we were in town with my phone, but posting here is not easy via phone.

SO…January 19-25: We moved to Whetstone, Arizona.  We stayed at Quail Ridge RV Park and we really enjoyed this park.  Spaces were good sized and it was a quiet park…a bit of highway noise at night, but not too bad.  We visited Pima Air Museum in Tuscon, went to Saguaro National Park a couple of times, visited the Desert Wildlife Museum and Reid Park Zoo.  Went to this cool place called Mescal Movie Set, visited Tombstone and hiked the San Piedro Riparian Petroglyph Trail.  We really enjoyed the area.  There was quite a bit more we would have liked to do, but we figure we can save it for next time!  If you have any suggestions, post in the comments!

January 25-27: We moved to Winterhaven, CA, just outside Yuma, AZ.  We stayed at Pilot Knob RV Resort and it was a nice park with lots of activities.  We visited Castle Dome City Mining Ghost Town, I could have stayed there all day, we did stay for several hours.  It is a well preserved mining town and there is so much stuff they have collected.  It is a self tour with some audio you can get on your phone.  Probably my favorite part was taking the truck down 10 miles of VERY washboard road and watching Ed hold on for dear life! LOL!  After the ghost town, we stopped to see Yuma Proving Grounds & Static Tank Display.  I picked up a few letterboxes along the way also.  As we were leaving, we went to the Center of the World in Felicity, CA.  We thought it was gonna be a really hokey roadside attraction, but in all honesty, it was pretty cool!  If you have time to look it up, read about it.  Really an interesting idea of the founder and we even paid the bit extra to go inside the pyramid and stand on the center of the world spot, made our wishes and got our certificate!

January 27-Feb 7: We moved to Campo, CA.  We stayed at the Lake Morena State Park.  This is an awesome park and is another one that we will re-visit.  This was the first time I backed the RV into a spot.  I was nervous as could be, but I did it!  (Our previous sites had been pull-thru sites) The weekends here were busy, but during the week it was us and maybe 3-4 other RV’s.  So quiet and at night it got super dark which was great for stargazing.  We had daily turkey visitors, they run so funny!  We visited the Railroad Museum and rode the train.  We went to a wonderful candy shop called Wisteria Candy Cottage.  The toffee was divine and I only got one tiny square.  I did get honeycomb toffee and it was really good too!  We visited the Birch Aquarium in San Diego and when we got home, I found a bee stuck to my windshield.  He was alive, but barely.  I took him inside to warm him up and he stayed for 4 days before it was warm enough to send him out into the world again. There is a wonderful little hole in the wall malt shop just down the road from the campground.  We ate there several times.  They made a wonderful pizza, the breakfast was great, Ed loved the burgers and I had several sandwiches that were very good.  Prices were reasonable and the cook is pretty cool.  We visited the USS Midway, the Maritime Museum and went on a whale watching tour.  We saw 5 whales on our tour and it was great.  We also spent a full day at the San Diego Zoo.

Feb 7- Feb 24: We moved to Santa Barbara, CA.  We stayed at Rancho Oso RV Park.  VERY nice park, lots to do, general store on site, gorgeous views and it is a horse ranch.  We did leave the day after arriving to go to Disneyland.  Instead of driving 2+ hours each way, we decided to stay in a hotel by Disneyland.  We, of course, had a blast at Disney, what can I say?  After 4 days at Disney, we went back to the RV. Rancho Oso has NO cellular service, they were having work done on the electric (so several days we had no electricity) and while we could text, no photos could be sent.  To get internet, we had to go to the lodge.  This is truly a ‘off the grid’ type campground and I loved it!  The only drawback is the road into the campground.  It is 1.1 miles of narrow and winding road. We took a trail called the waterfall trail, a 1 mile hike each way…..well, we got onto the wrong trail and ended up taking a 4 mile hike!  Ed was a trooper.  We had a good laugh and the waterfall was pretty.  We visited Santa Barbara Pier, but it was so foggy, you couldn’t really see much.  We liked the shops.  We also visited Vandenberg Space Force Base and on the way back, stopped at Arroyo Burro Beach because Ed had read that it was a good beach for finding sea glass.  I found a few tiny pieces, but it was fun to walk the beach…there was a ‘leash free’ dog area and that was fun…we had several dogs visit us. We had walked about a mile down the beach and a rainstorm popped outta nowhere!  We were soaked, but it made it more of an adventure to remember.  We visited Solvang for 2 days, I loved it.  I wanted to do a wine tasting, but since Ed never drinks, it wouldn’t have been much fun. We went to Lake Cachuma, I will say, the couple of lakes we have been to here leave much to be desired…there is hardly any water in them!  Cachuma has an island on it, well, you could walk to it.  We spent a lot of time at Rancho Oso just chilling.  The view was amazing, mountains all around.  I had several hummingbirds who visited my feeder frequently and also many birds who visited my feeder.  I made some friends who were in the site next to us.  They also are Thousand Trail members and we swapped tips and tricks with each other.  I kinda hated to leave Rancho Oso, but always look forward to what comes next!

Feb 24-March 10: We moved to Morgan Hill, CA.  We are currently at Morgan Hill RV Park.  It is a big park in the rolling green hills.  We just got her a couple days ago, so I don’t know much yet.  We got a nice spot, a pull through that is good sized.  As I am typing this update, I got my first hummingbird visitor.  He’s been back for a few fill ups.  Hummingbirds are kinda a thing for me.  I have always loved them.  I put out two hummingbird feeders, one bird seed feeder and a suet basket up as soon as we get to our sites.  I really enjoy watching the birds, especially because there are so many varieties at each stop.  We got here later in the day on Wednesday, got fully set up Thursday and did our food shopping on Friday.  It is now Saturday and we try to make Saturday and Sunday our “Chill Out” days, because we don’t like to be in the hustle and bustle of the weekend crowds.  ETA; I am publishing this post late due to being sick in bed with the flu for the last 2.5 days!  Carry on… lol

Now that we have internet, I will try better to update more frequently.  This made for a long post and a photo heavy one, too.  I hope everyone is doing well!
